The hotels and catering trade in Great Britain wants to make beer women-friendlier. The pint glass is to be replaced for women with wine glasses that do justice to the taste and sit more comfortably in the hand. According to Scotland on Sunday, the initiative comes after it was found that most women prefer wine to beer. Female pub-goers prefer wine: 36 percent order wine, as opposed to 14 percent who order beer. According to the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPB) the cause of this is the pint, the “half-litre” glass. Women find the big glass ugly and unpractical. So a beer glass has been introduced specially for women. The glass is slender, has a foot, and contains only one third (18.5 cl) of what a “man's glass” holds. So the threshold between wine and beer must be lowered. Not only women turn their nose up at beer; total beer consumption has nosedived. In Germany, where traditionally vast amounts of were drunk, the average beer drinker now drinks only 206 half-litres (that is: 103 full litres) per year. In 1990 the same drinker drank 258. The idea is not completely new. In 2003 Volvo created a concept car “by women for women”.
