Beer less harmful for the liver than spirits

American scientists have shown that the mortality rate because of liver cirrhosis is mainly related to the drinking of spirits and much less to the drinking of beer or wine. Though an over consumption of beer and wine also has a negative effect, it has turned out that mainly the over consumption of strong alcoholic drinks is bad for the liver.
The mortality because of liver cirrhosis in the United States was at its highest in 1973. After that the incidence of liver cirrhosis dropped, while the alcohol consumption kept increasing. What did change however, was the drinking pattern of the Americans: they started drinking more beer and wine and less strong alcoholic drinks. Also the treatment of alcoholism improved, which turned out to be an additional reason for the decreased mortality rated because of liver cirrhosis after 1973.
