alcohol and body 14/12/2005 Moderate drinkers don't grow fat
Anyone who drinks no more than three alcoholic beverages a week is less likely to gain excess weight than would be a total abstainer. But more than four drinks each time sends 46 percent the other way around! Or so it would appear, according to a recent study by Ahmed Arif, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Lubbock, and James Rohrer, from the Mayo Clinic Rochester. The survey examined the health of 8 236 non-smokers. The researchers are careful to point out: "This is not a green light for hitting the bottle, "but it is now abundantly clear that total abstinence is nowhere near as healthy as one would have once thought. The Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1988-1994 is published in BMC Public Health. Source: BMC Public Health 2005, 5:126 | ![]() |
