SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Beer and wine have a comparable positive effect on health

Studies on the effects of moderate drinking on health often do not distinguish between the different types of alcoholic beverage. American scientists therefore studied, in a representative cross-section of the American population, based on 42 862 interviews, whether the effects on health of beer, wine and spirits are similar or different. They came to the conclusion that moderate consumption of beer and wine (approximately 2 glasses per day for men and 1 glass per day for women) has a beneficial effect on the heart and blood pressure. Moderate beer and wine drinkers have fewer problems with high blood pressure and are less prone to heart disease compared with teetotalers. On the other hand, lovers of spirits have more problems with stomach disorders, chronic heart disease and arthritis compared with beer drinkers and wine drinkers. However, no difference was found between beer drinkers and wine drinkers.
